If you followed the blog for any reasonable amount of time you know I have big love for Amazon. Too much really. I’m considering starting a self-help group.
Anyway, to add to the list of the billion wonderful things about Amazon, is free e-books. Ahem. FREE! I know what you’re thinking. Pshaw, those are just the crappy “I uploaded straight to Amazon after NaNo without even editing” books. Well, that’s true, some of those are there.
But you can also find a lot of great other books there, many of them the classics. If you’re like me, you may already own some of these in print form, but it never hurts to have a good book available on your phone or Kindle on the plane or whenever else you need to kill time. I probably “purchased” 30 or so books myself. I didn’t scour through all the plethora of free books, but I think I found a substantial amount of gems among the coal.
The goods:
- The Complete Sherlock Holmes
- The Scarlet Letter
- The Jungle Book
- White Fang
- The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
- Gulliver’s Travels
- The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
- The Three Musketeers
- Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
And a bunch from Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, even a copy of Little Black Sambo I’d heard of reading my friend Amal’s blog.
I also picked up a few others I thought looked interesting: Darkness Falls by Jessica Sorenson, Bah, Humbug! by Heather Horrocks, The Soulkeepers by G.P. Ching, The Book of Deacon by Joseph Lailo, and Child of the Mist by Kathleen Morgan.
Go forth and get for free my friends. If you don’t have a Kindle, it’s all good, you can get the Kindle app on your smartphone and read it there. And if you don’t even have a smartphone, still all good, you can download it and read it on Amazon—holding onto it for later when you do get a Kindle. (My friend is selling me her old one for $20. Amazon lending library HERE I COME!)
Are there any free books on Amazon I missed out on that you’d highly recommend? You know I love a good deal! What books did you get free that maybe aren’t now but you think are still worth paying for? Any books on the cheap you think we should pick up? Let us all know below.
Who doesn’t love free?
Don’t get self help! You found a score in some good reading! Now if only I had a kindle or a downloadable reader thingy lol! Think that is my next thing to get on my list.
You should look on Craigslist or something to see if there’s a used Kindle. Since they’re selling the one for $60, you should be able to pick up a first generation or thereabouts for half the price. The BFF has a first gen and I read the Hunger Games on it, works for me. Kindles are awesome.
I’ve been reading Jane Eyre, which I got for free on I-Books!
I just re-read Jane Eyre, too! Finished it yesterday.
I believe Jane Eyre was one of the freebies. I’ve got a whole lot of reading to do. 😉
I love how many classics are available for free on Amazon. It’s a wonderful resource!
PS. I should join your Amazon addiction self-help group. Ha!
What would we call it Amazon Anonymous? AmaNon? 😉
a self-help group, ha
I *love* Amazon as well, just always get the best deal and I love my kindle paperwhite..made of awesome!
My friend has a paperwhite. Pretty cool looking. I think eventually I’ll convert to Kindle Fire, but for now I’m good with a cheap used Kindle. I’m glad I’m not alone in the “Amazon Owns My Soul” club.
I recently signed up for the Kindle Daily Deals email…big mistake. True, they’re not free, but I’m like, ooh, this book’s only 99 cents, and it looks interesting, and hey, that one’s under $3, and I was planning on buying it eventually anyways, might as well buy it right this instant before the price goes back up. I don’t even know how many books are sitting there on my kindle, just waiting to be read, while I’m still browsing daily on the deals page.
p.s. Yesterday’s daily deal was “The Knife of Never Letting Go,” which I’ve been wanting to read since I saw that awesome title. So excited! Sounds like I’ll have to check out the free classics, too, while I’m at it. 😉
It’s all right. You can join the Amazon Addicted support group, which probably won’t stop you from shopping on Amazon, but at least you know you’re in good company.
I just stumbled across a $3 MP3 album promotion where a lot of good older albums are on sale for $3 (bought a couple of Mat Kearney ones). Stop making me love you so much Amazon!
Yay! And that is such a cute scribble. I have the Complete Sherlock Holmes in paperback. Very good. Just thought I’d mention that 😉
I figured you would. You might as well pick up a digital copy for those days you can’t lug the book around. 😉
True. I should do that some time. THAT is the incentive to get a digital reading app. Tehe, Holmes, you’ve done it again.
